Insurance for mental health has come a long way! There are still some improvements that need to be made to make it actually helpful for people.
Why using your insurance may not work for you.
Research shows that over 50% of improvement comes from finding a therapist that you mesh with. If you find a therapist within your insurance network, and they are not a good fit, you may not see the results you were looking for.
You have to have a mental health diagnosis in order to use your insurance. Not everyone that is moving through motherhood has a mental health diagnosis! This is a really transformative time in life and having a therapist to help move through that can be really helpful!
Some insurances have limits on the amount of sessions you can be seen for which speeds up the therapy process even when it really needs to slow down.
You have more control of your sessions! You get to choose what your goals are and what to focus on from session to session. If you use insurance you are limited to working on issues only relationship to your mental health diagnosis, and may not be able to process the normal life stressors that come up when moving through motherhood.
Insurance claim denials or delays that interrupt the flow of treatment.
Why Using Your Insurance Isn’t Always Best
That being said…
I do accept a few insurances if using your insurance is the best choice for you.

The Good Faith Estimate
Under the law, health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.
You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time during treatment.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, or how to dispute a bill, see your Estimate, or visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
